Aquazzura x ELPIDA: When refinement becomes care

“I’m so grateful for the sun,” I overheard a beautiful woman whisper to her friend while walking along the Athenian Riviera during Easter break. Nearby, waves crashed against the coast, while the first warm days of the year against my skin created something that felt almost cinematic. "The moment it is out, I get so much hope for life”, she said smiling. “Of course,” her friend replied, “beauty is the antidote to everything.” This last phrase lingered in my mind for days. I realised that it truly is an unwritten law defining Greek culture - a philosophy rooted in sunlight, sea air and resilience. It was also the very same emotional frequency I encountered shortly after during a conversation with Edgardo Osorio, the founder and creative force behind the globally renowned luxury maison Aquazzura. Having conquered A-list dressing, the designer is now venturing into a project that shifts the tone. And while our conversation centred around Aquazzura’s profoundly moving collaboration with the Greek ELPIDA Association, what emerged was a reflection on the emotional power of beauty itself - and on how luxury fashion can transform its influence into something that truly shapes the world: a tangible, deeply human act of care.
Edgardo Osorio is no stranger to Greece's light, sensuality and quiet sophistication. “I have been coming to Greece every summer for the past twenty years, and over time it has become a place I feel deeply connected to,” he told me as we began our conversation. “I have always loved the country. There is something about the light, the sea, the simplicity and the quiet elegance of island life that I find endlessly inspiring. Every time I go there, I feel emotionally and creatively restored.” His understanding of Greece felt surprisingly intimate, almost philosophical. “What I love most about it is the balance it offers between beauty and ease,” Osorio reflected. “Nothing feels overworked. There is sensuality, history, nature and refinement, but everything exists in such a natural way.” Listening to him describe the Greek islands, it became obvious why he has remained so emotionally connected to them. “They have this timeless atmosphere that reminds you that sophistication can be effortless, emotional and deeply connected to place. I also have many Greek friends.”
One of the Greek friends Osorio referred to is, of course, Marianna Lemou - the woman who would ultimately give his long-standing emotional connection to Greece the opportunity to evolve into something very meaningful. It was through her that the designer was first introduced to the ELPIDA Association and the extraordinary legacy left behind by her grandmother, the late philanthropist Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, who founded the organisation almost four decades ago. “Marianna introduced me to the charity while we were discussing the work that she and her mother, Christianna Vardinogianni, have been doing to help children affected by cancer and support their families,” he explained. “The idea of collaborating together for such an important cause in a country that is so very dear to my heart came very naturally.” Listening to Osorio speak about ELPIDA, it became immediately obvious why he connected deeply with the association. “What moved me immediately was that this is not simply an organisation offering support in an abstract way,” he reflected. “It is changing lives in the most direct, human sense. When you see the depth of care, the dedication to the children, and the lasting difference ELPIDA has made in Greece, you understand that this is something truly exceptional.”
Looking more closely into ELPIDA’s work, it became easy to understand why the initiative affected him so profoundly. According to the association, approximately 350 children are diagnosed with childhood cancer at Greece every year, and an overwhelming 85% of them find their way to ELPIDA’s Oncology Hospital for treatment. There, every child, including those who are completely uninsured, is admitted and cared for entirely free of charge, while three out of four children are cured. For Osorio, stepping into a story with such emotional weight was something important. “To be invited to become part of this commitment is a real honour,” he admitted. “It is a legacy built not only on vision, but on devotion, consistency and love over decades.” What seemed to move him most was ELPIDA’s extraordinary sense of continuity. “Christianna is carrying forward a legacy of compassion with elegance, intelligence and real commitment,” he mentioned.
Using his own creative language, Osorio ultimately decided to contribute in the way he knows best. For a designer whose universe has long revolved around beauty and escapism, the Aquazzura x ELPIDA collaboration became a bridge between the beauty of fashion and responsibility. “Aquazzura has always been about creating beauty that brings joy, confidence and emotion into people’s lives,” he explained. “With ELPIDA, there was an opportunity to connect that world of beauty to something deeper - to compassion, hope and solidarity. It felt very natural to become part of this story, because when you believe in celebrating life, you must also support the people and institutions who protect it in its most fragile moments.” I wondered what this intimate collaboration meant to him compared to the more traditional partnerships we have previously seen from Aquazzura. “It means everything. A traditional collaboration is usually about creativity, visibility, or exploring a new world. This is completely different. You are contributing to something that touches families at their most vulnerable moment, and that carries a very profound emotional weight.” As he was speaking, I found myself thinking that the meaning of the association’s name in Greek is hope. I wondered what hope meant to a man who has built an entire universe around emotion. “Hope is the ability to imagine light even in the darkest moments,” he replied. “It is a force that helps people continue, rebuild, believe and love. In the context of ELPIDA, hope is of course healing, scientific progress and the dream of a future for every child. But more broadly, it is also dignity, tenderness and the feeling that no one is alone.” Osorio is a man constantly surrounded by beauty, creativity and extraordinary people, so I was curious to hear where he finds hope today. “People give me hope. Those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. Families who find strength they did not know they had. Doctors, nurses, researchers, foundations - all those who continue to believe in the value of every single life. I also find hope in beauty, in creativity, in nature, in the sea, in the sun, in all these things that remind us that life renews itself constantly.”
Of course, the collaboration could not only rely on emotions, as after all, Aquazzura is a brand built on the transformative power of beautiful objects. After reviewing the collection, which consists of Venetian-style slippers for men and women, alongside a summer-ready pouch for carefree warm days, I found myself wondering how Osorio approached translating his emotions for the cause into a collection that still carries the lightness and escapism associated with the brand’s identity. “The collection was inspired by the simple but powerful idea of translating the feeling of the Mediterranean into something light, uplifting and full of warmth - inspired by the sun and the sea,” he explained. “We worked with a sun-and-sea palette, and with our Mini Palm motif. Palms immediately evoke warmth, sunshine, travel and optimism,” he said of the collection’s recurring motif, which acts as a visual reminder of resilience and positivity. The marine blue and khaki green palette was also chosen for its calm and grounded sensibility. Listening to him describe the creative process, it became increasingly obvious that the collection was deeply influenced by the quiet elegance that defines Greece. “Mediterranean beauty resonates so deeply because it is tied to emotion, memory and atmosphere,” Osorio reflected. “The sun, the sea, the clarity of the light are elements that immediately make you feel calm, open and restored. In difficult moments, that kind of beauty can be especially powerful because it reminds us that life also contains softness, warmth and renewal.” At its core, however, Osorio wanted the collection to carry something beyond aesthetics alone. “I want the pieces to feel bright, elegant and easy, while still holding emotional meaning,” he told me. I wondered what he ultimately hopes people will feel when wearing the collection out into the world. His answer captured the entire philosophy behind the collaboration with surprising clarity. “I hope they feel they are carrying something with meaning - something joyful and elegant, but also connected to a larger act of care,” he confessed.
Of course, nothing demonstrates the magnitude a collection like this can have more than the real lives it ultimately touches. With a celebratory luncheon scheduled on the Athenian coast for early June to officially unveil the collection, followed closely by a deeply personal visit to the ELPIDA Oncology Unit, the collaboration gracefully shifts from the sketchbook to the reality of ELPIDA’s mission. “I feel very honoured to have the opportunity to visit the Oncology Unit in Athens, to listen, learn and spend time with the children and their families,” Osorio noted softly, looking ahead to a moment that will undoubtedly strip away the glitter of high fashion to reveal something far more meaningful. “If I can bring even a small moment of warmth or joy through that visit, it would mean a great deal to me.” It is a gesture that beautifully encapsulates his evolving perspective on the industry he has helped shape for decades, suggesting that true luxury may ultimately be defined by soul. “Beauty has always been central to my work, but this collaboration reminded me that beauty is not only what we see. It is also what we do, what we give, and what we make possible for others,” he reflected. “True luxury today has a responsibility to engage in a more meaningful way with humanity. It is about using our emotional and cultural influence to create a legacy that not only inspires desire, but also translates into generosity, solidarity and care.” As our conversation came to an end, I found myself reflecting on everything we had discussed. Perhaps beauty truly is the antidote to everything - not just because it distracts us from darkness, but because, in the right hands, it can become a vehicle for resilience, humanity and hope itself.
